CHEAP OIL

Priolo Gargallo, Augusta / 2011

On the eastern coast of Sicily lies one of the largest oil refining centre of the Mediterranean region. Created in the 1950s-60s by private and public initiatives, it was seen as the answer to the local economic and social underdevelopment. Oil-euphoria lasted for just a few decades, then refineries and petrochemical plants began to shrink under the pressure of a growing international competition. The dark side of such a rapid heavy industrialization emerged then: severe soil and water pollution, life-threatening diseases amongst inhabitants and a natural landscape definitively compromised.
