Charleroi / 2006, 2009, 2013 / COCKERILL-SAMBRE (Cokerie Marchienne)

Between the 19th and 20th century the Belgian city of Charleroi made its fortune on coal mining and steelmaking, becoming one of the leading centre of European heavy industry. Starting from 1950s, the economic and social decline slowly transformed such a vibrant coal metropolis in the ghost of itself. Through the years almost all heavy industry disappeared, leaving just a few burning spots which, in turn, have been quenched - the last existing blast furnace was shut down in 2008. Since then, the city of Charleroi is looking for a new image, struggling between urban and economic regeneration and the will to promote its recent, cumbersome past.
